Princely Companions

John Perkins

Does a prince have friends? I would have to say no. Friend is too vague a word. From a certain unrefined perspective a prince could be said to have friends, but he does not. A prince has allies, people who do for him and who he does for. A prince has advisers, people with whom he may choose to discuss courses of action. A prince has teachers, people who help a prince to sharpen his mind. A prince has vassals, people he has a duty toward, to ensure their safety and well-being. A prince may have a confidante or consort, a person to keep their secrets. A prince does not have friends.
